Pastoral

The pastoral care at St John's is administered through both our 'Animal System' as well as our 'Tutor System' for boys in Years 6 to 8.
Upon arrival, each boy is placed in an 'Animal' (without the aid of a sorting hat!) similar to most school 'Houses' - A system of fraternal or wider family links will ensure that a boy is able to maintain his family's connection with a particular animal.
Each boy then aims to collect as many TYES for his team as he can be committing worthy deeds (all deeds are recognised be they academic, pastoral, sporting, artistic or altruistic). The term TYE is taken from Tigers, Yaks and Emus, which make up the three Animals. Each term concludes with a grand ‘Count-Up’ where the winning animal is crowned and rewarded with a celebratory party. Animal competition is further extended by a range of inter-animal rivalry including rugby, cricket, soccer, quiz, music, swimming and science.

Boys from years 6 to 8 meet twice weekly with their personal tutors who offer pastoral support as well as delivering important parts of the school's PSHE and current affairs programme.

Were a boy to become worried for any reason he would, in the first instance speak to his Class Tutor, who he sees at least three times a day. Following this he may wish to speak to his Animal Tutor, of which there are three in the School. Failing this, any member of staff would be available for pastoral support including both Deputy Headmasters, our Child Liaison Protection officer or the School's 'Independent Listener'.
