Science
The overall aim of this programme is that children should come to understand, appreciate and respect the scientific approach to understanding the World, to recognise how science affects their lives and to have the enthusiasm to engage with scientific ideas themselves.
The programme for Years 3 – 6 is divided into six units of work. The units are based on those in the scheme of work published by the QCA in England. Each unit is intended to occupy 10 – 12 hours of teaching time and is focused on a specific aspect of science.
The programme for Years 7 and 8 is organised slightly differently. Although once more divided into units, these correlate to one of the three sciences. The three sciences are taught in blocks until all units for that science have been taught. Traditionally chemistry is taught from the beginning of year 7 to mid – Easter term, followed by biology which extends into the Christmas term of year 8 and finally physic is taught from the mid - Christmas and Easter terms of year 8 with an adequate revision period left to revisit topics prior to Common Entrance / Scholarship.
The Science department is housed in a purpose built laboratory and preparation room. Pupils from Year 4 are taught in the laboratory regularly and practical sessions form a significant part of each Year's curriculum.
