English
English is taught as a subject from Nursery to Year 8 (Rudiments). The Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals are taught pre Year 1 with the National Curriculum being taught Year 1 through to Year 6. Years 7 and 8 follow the Common Entrance syllabus and the Year 7 and 8 scholarship years follow an individually tailored curriculum to suit the expectations of their respective scholarship examinations.
Lessons are centred on reading, writing, spelling and grammar skills. Reading lessons include the teaching of comprehension skills, guided reading sessions, individual reading (during a library lesson) and the completion of book reviews. Pupils are also taught the key features of a range of writing texts. These include fiction and non-fiction as well as poetry. Class readers are an important part of the lessons, with reading and writing tasks being linked to the text themes. Spelling lists are handed out each week and these are learnt for a weekly spelling test. Spelling is also carefully monitored in writing tasks and ‘Tricky Word Lists’ are built up as appropriate. These are individual to each pupil. Grammar is taught as a separate lesson but again, this is monitored in writing tasks.
Outside trips are another exciting part of teaching English and we aim to take all year groups from Year 5 to Year 8 to the theatre once a year. We also visit Stratford and the Roald Dahl Museum. Authors and books are celebrated with specially organised days and activities.
The annual ‘Verse Speaking Competition’ sees all pupils from Year 4 to Year 8 learning a poem to recite during a class competition. Winners of the class competition then take part in the school competition with prizes being awarded in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories. An overall winner is then chosen from these groups.
