Modern Foreign Languages
All pupils, from age 6 (Year 2) are offered the opportunity to learn at least one foreign language at St Johns Beaumont. All boys start learning French in Berchmans all the way through to Rudiments. In Upper Figures (Year 7), Spanish is offered as a second foreign language.
Each year, Upper Figures (Year 7) go to France and enjoy the opportunity to practice their French. This year, boys have had to purchase their own lunch at the local market of Ambrières and could only eat what they could order in French! A good balance of language classes, outdoor activities and visits to local landmarks allowed everyone to have fun. We are looking forward to taking the boys to France again this year. In the Spanish class, all boys have been offered the opportunity to write to a penfriend.
In Lower and Upper Elements, we follow hélico courses. In Lower, Upper Figures and Rudiments, we are using Encore Tricolore.
At the end of Rudiments, boys take Common Entrance examinations in French and/or Spanish. The majority of boys preparing for Common Entrance will sit the higher tier paper in French. We also prepare Great Figures A for their chosen scholarships.
Alongside the linguistic demands and expectation of the subjects, we hope that boys will develop a genuine interest and tolerance of other cultures and ecome curious about foreign countries and in turn, not fear unfamiliar situations.
