Sport at St John

Sporting Tradition & Excellence

Physical Education is an essential element in the broad curriculum offered at St John's. All boys participate in a wide range of physical activities specifically designed to improve their levels of confidence and skill.  Attention is paid during PE lessons and Games time to developing each boy's technical skills, speed, stamina, and agility so that he is able to enjoy games, or indeed any physical activity, to the best of his ability.

Underpinning the entire Physical Education programme is the rich tradition of sport at St John's.  Rugby is played by all boys from Year 2 during the Christmas and Easter terms followed by a short period of soccer, whilst Cricket is played in the Summer term.  In addition to these two major sports, St John's also offers comprehensive and competitive programmes in Swimming, Tennis, Athletics, Rowing and Cross Country.  Whilst the school has achieved a high level of success in all of these sports, it remains a core philosophy of the school that all skill levels are catered for, so that boys are afforded the opportunity to develop at their own pace and within an environment that engenders confidence and enjoyment.

Alongside a comprehensive 'Games' programme as detailed above, each boy will engage in a PE 'carousel' each year, adn will experience a range of different sports and activities each half term. For instance, this year boys from years 3 to 8 will experience; Indoor soccer, badminton, basketball, health related fitness, golf and rock climbing. Boys in the Junior School follow a PE curriculum that encorporates essential co-ordination skills, including soccer, tennis, swimming, balancing and general agility.
